Debt payoff: snowball vs avalanche
Have several debts? Two popular strategies are the snowball (pay off the smallest balance first for quick wins) and the avalanche (pay the highest interest rate first to save the most). Enter up to three debts and an extra monthly amount to compare how fast each gets you debt-free and what each costs.

How we calculate
- Your total monthly payment stays constant; when a debt is paid off, its minimum rolls to the next target.
- Rates are fixed and no new charges are added. Leave a balance at 0 to skip a debt.
Understanding your results
The avalanche always costs the same or less in interest. The snowball can still be the right choice if early wins keep you motivated, especially when the difference is small.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, snowball or avalanche?
Mathematically the avalanche saves more interest. Behaviorally, many people stick with the snowball better. The best plan is the one you will follow.
What if my minimums are too low?
If a minimum is less than the monthly interest, that debt grows. The calculator will show 'never' — raise the payment.
Should I include my mortgage?
Usually not. These methods are mainly for credit cards, personal loans and similar debts.
