Retirement nest egg calculator

Estimate how big your retirement savings could be by the time you stop working, and roughly how much yearly income that pot could provide. Results are shown in future dollars and in today's dollars so inflation doesn't flatter the numbers.

Year-by-year schedule

Totals per year.

How we calculate

Future value: B(m) = B(m−1)(1 + r/12) + contribution; real = B ÷ (1 + inflation)^years
  • Constant annual return, compounded monthly; contributions are fixed (not increased with pay).
  • Employer match, Social Security and taxes are not included; add a match to your monthly contribution if you get one.
  • The withdrawal rate is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee.

Understanding your results

Focus on the today's-dollars figure: it tells you what the nest egg would buy now. If the income looks short, the most powerful levers are contributing more and starting earlier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4% rule?

A guideline from historical studies suggesting that withdrawing about 4% of your portfolio in year one, then adjusting for inflation, has usually lasted 30 years. It's a starting point, not a promise.

What return should I assume?

A diversified stock-and-bond portfolio is often modeled at 5–7% nominal. Use a lower rate to be conservative.

Should I include Social Security?

This calculator only projects your savings. Add your estimated Social Security benefit (from ssa.gov) to the income figure separately.
